To combat the surging tide of AI-generated content, Spotify is officially rolling out a “Verified by Spotify” badge. This initiative, launched globally this week, aims to help listeners distinguish authentic human artists from automated, AI-driven musical outputs on the platform.
The Criteria for Human Verification
Securing the new badge requires more than just a presence on the platform. Spotify is mandating evidence of an identifiable artist footprint, including verified concert dates, official merchandise, and linked social media accounts. Crucially, profiles dedicated primarily to AI-generated music or synthetic personas are strictly excluded from the verification program.
Furthermore, consistent listener engagement is a key metric. Spotify is prioritizing artists who maintain sustained fan interest over time, intentionally filtering out accounts that experience singular, artificial spikes in engagement.

Rollout and Scope
At launch, over 99% of artists currently sought out by listeners will receive the verification status. These artists span a diverse range of genres, regions, and career stages. Users will notice the green checkmark accompanied by “Verified by Spotify” text appearing on profiles and within search results over the coming weeks.
The company emphasizes that this is an ongoing process. The absence of a badge does not permanently disqualify an artist, as the platform intends to expand the program continuously. Furthermore, “functional music” creators—those producing algorithm-optimized background or focus tracks—are being deprioritized in favor of artists contributing significantly to music culture.

Transparency and Artist Protection
“We’ve designed this new verification program thoughtfully with listeners and artists in mind, and we’ll continue to evolve this program over time,” Spotify noted in a recent blog post. The objective is to foster trust and facilitate meaningful connections between fans and human creators.
In addition to the badge, Spotify is launching a beta profile section highlighting career milestones, touring schedules, and release history. This serves as a secondary layer of authenticity for artists who may not yet meet the full verification criteria.
These efforts are part of a broader strategy to mitigate the impact of low-quality AI “slop” and unauthorized impersonations. Last month, Spotify introduced an “Artist Profile Protection” beta, allowing musicians to review and approve tracks associated with their name before they go live.
This proactive stance follows high-profile industry pressure, including Sony Music’s request for the removal of over 135,000 AI-generated songs that mimicked its artists. While Spotify has not disclosed specific figures regarding AI-generated tracks on its own platform, competitor Deezer recently reported that AI content currently accounts for 44% of its daily new music uploads.
