Alphabet added 25 million new paid subscriptions in the first quarter of 2026, reaching a total of 350 million users across its ecosystem. Revealed in Wednesday’s earnings report, this growth marks a significant jump from the 325 million subscribers reported in Q4 2025, fueled primarily by the expansion of YouTube and Google One services.
Gemini Growth and Enterprise Adoption
While the earnings report did not disclose specific subscriber counts for Gemini or its monthly active user base, the company confirmed that advanced AI features are now deeply integrated into Google One plans, contributing to their upward trajectory.
The company maintained its previous benchmark of 750 million users for the Gemini chatbot. Despite the lack of updated total figures, Google highlighted strong momentum in the enterprise sector, reporting a 40% quarter-over-quarter increase in paid monthly active users for its AI tools.
The YouTube Revenue Balancing Act
YouTube ad revenue faced headwinds this quarter, missing Wall Street projections. According to CNBC, analysts anticipated $9.99 billion in ad revenue, but Alphabet reported $9.88 billion.
This shortfall is largely attributed to the successful migration of users toward YouTube Premium. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has previously urged analysts to view YouTube’s financial performance through a dual lens of advertising and subscription revenue, noting that as more users opt for ad-free experiences, a corresponding impact on traditional ad revenue is expected.
Subscription Shift vs. Ad Revenue
Although YouTube generated $9.9 billion in ad revenue this quarter—an 11% increase year-over-year—the slight miss compared to expectations underscores a shifting consumer preference. Last year, YouTube’s combined revenue from ads and subscriptions exceeded $60 billion, with Q4 2025 alone accounting for $11.4 billion in ad income. The current data suggests that the transition to ad-free viewing is accelerating.
Alphabet’s Financial Health
Despite the fluctuations in ad revenue, Alphabet shares rose following a strong quarterly performance that exceeded Wall Street expectations. The company posted total revenue of $109.9 billion, bolstered by robust performance in its cloud division, which generated over $20 billion in revenue for the quarter.
