OpenAI is preparing to launch a specialized AI-powered smart speaker, envisioned as the “physical manifestation” of ChatGPT. The device, currently in development for a 2027 release, aims to deepen the integration of artificial intelligence into daily domestic life.
Design and Premium Build
Recent reports indicate that the hardware will feature a unique “donut-shaped” design. This form factor is intended to enhance portability, allowing users to move the speaker easily between rooms, such as from the kitchen counter to a bedside table. The unit will be constructed from high-quality metal to ensure a premium aesthetic and will include distinctive “moving parts,” a design choice that remains a subject of intrigue.
Market Positioning and Pricing
The device is expected to retail between $300 and $400. This price point positions it significantly above the current smart speaker market, where Amazon’s offerings typically range from $40 to $240. While the move aligns with OpenAI’s goal of embedding ChatGPT into the home, the company faces a challenging landscape; historically, smart speakers have not always been profitable, and analysts suggest this may be a difficult market to break into.
Partnerships and Legal Hurdles
Development is being conducted in collaboration with LoveFrom, the design studio established by legendary former Apple designer Jony Ive. However, the path to hardware production has been complicated by legal friction. Apple has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging the theft of trade secrets, claims which OpenAI has consistently denied.
