India’s mobile app ecosystem is experiencing an unprecedented revenue surge, with in-app purchases hitting $300 million in the first quarter—a 33% increase year-over-year. However, according to data from Sensor Tower, the lion’s share of this capital is flowing directly into the coffers of global platforms rather than domestic developers.
Non-Gaming Apps Drive Q1 Revenue Growth
The primary engine behind this growth is the non-gaming sector, which generated over $200 million in Q1, marking a 44% spike compared to the previous year. This expansion is largely fueled by utility tools, video streaming services, and the rapid adoption of generative AI applications.
This trajectory underscores a significant transformation in the Indian digital landscape. Annual in-app purchase revenue has climbed from $520 million in 2021 to surpass $1 billion in 2025, with projections hitting $1.25 billion by the end of this year. While total annual downloads have stabilized at roughly 25 billion, the increase in time spent within apps indicates a deepening user commitment and a growing propensity to pay for premium digital experiences.
Global Platforms Dominate the Market

International tech giants—including Google (Google One), Meta (Facebook), OpenAI (ChatGPT), and YouTube—are capturing the majority of consumer spending. While domestic players like JioHotstar and Sony LIV maintain a strong foothold in the video streaming category, the download charts also reflect this international trend: ChatGPT, Instagram, and the Chinese short-drama platform FreeReels are currently leading the market, with local apps like Story TV, JioHotstar, and Meesho following behind.
Monetization Potential vs. Current Reality
Donny Kristianto, principal market insights manager at Sensor Tower, notes that while the market has matured regarding download volume, monetization is accelerating as digital payment habits become ingrained in daily life.
Despite this progress, India remains a low-spending market on a per-user basis. It generates approximately $0.03 in revenue per download, a figure that pales in comparison to the $0.20+ seen in Southeast Asia and Latin America. Currently, spending remains heavily concentrated in productivity, social media, and video streaming, with the latter accounting for nearly 50% of the top 10 revenue-generating apps.
The Rise of AI and Short-Form Content
Emerging categories are signaling significant room for further expansion. Generative AI apps have seen a 69% year-over-year increase in downloads, with ChatGPT consistently ranking at the top for both installs and revenue. India currently stands as ChatGPT’s largest market by user count.
Simultaneously, short-drama platforms are experiencing explosive growth, with download figures surging over 400%, led by apps such as FreeReels. These trends indicate that while India is in the early stages of its monetization journey, the diversification of app categories is rapidly evolving consumer willingness to spend.
