Social media startup Yope has secured $12.3 million in a funding round led by Northzone to scale its private, algorithm-free, and ad-free networking platform. Designed as a direct counter-narrative to entertainment-heavy giants like TikTok and Instagram, Yope focuses on “micro-communities” where users interact exclusively with friends and family in private spaces.
A Private Haven for Self-Expression
Unlike traditional platforms that prioritize viral content, Yope is built on the premise that users want intimacy. The app features private-by-default accounts and eliminates the algorithmic feed entirely. Rather than relying on advertising, the company is betting on a premium, subscription-based business model to monetize power users.

Data-Driven Insights on Youth Behavior
Bahram Ismailau, London-based co-founder and CEO, developed the concept after conducting over 100,000 AI-assisted interviews. The research revealed that roughly 30% of young users were already maintaining “spam” or “photo dump” accounts to share candid moments with a select inner circle. Ismailau noted that many teens feel they have no space for self-expression unless they are willing to perform as influencers.
“We found this big opportunity to create a new space for young people to be social. We called it Yope, and it’s an AI-native social platform for young people and the next generation,” Ismailau explained.
AI as a Connector, Not a Creator
While Yope is “AI-native,” the company avoids using artificial intelligence to generate content. Instead, AI serves as an infrastructure tool to facilitate human connection. Upcoming features include AI-generated mini-games for friends and tools to help users coordinate real-world meetups, such as finding local events, restaurants, or bars.
The app’s interface features a collage-style “wall” where users pin photos that can be transformed into cut-out stickers. This customization-first approach draws inspiration from the Myspace era, allowing users to reflect their personalities through music, interests, and personalized wallpapers.

Growth Metrics and Investor Backing
Yope currently claims nearly 15 million registered users. Engagement metrics show that 10 to 20 million pieces of content are shared weekly, with over 50% of users opening the app at least five days a week. Notably, 20% of the active user base has invited older family members to join, suggesting a cross-generational appeal.

Northzone, which has previously backed Spotify and Klarna, led the $12.3 million round, with participation from Inovo, Redseed, and Geek Ventures. This brings Yope’s total funding to $20 million. Pär-Jörgen Pärson, a partner at Northzone, described Yope as a “safe take on social media” that contrasts with the “predatory practices” of major platforms.

The company plans to use the capital to expand its 35-person team and establish a new office in the United States. Yope is currently available as a free download on iOS and Android.
Correction: Users are exchanging 10 to 20 million pieces of content weekly, not daily; the founder misspoke. We have updated the post accordingly.
