X has implemented a strategic adjustment to its recommendation algorithm, designed to increase the visibility of posts from “mutuals”—users who follow each other. Nikita Bier, the platform’s head of product, announced the update on Monday, aiming to foster a more familiar environment within reply threads.
Restoring Community Dynamics
According to Bier, the platform identified a significant gap in its previous algorithmic logic, which inadvertently suppressed content from friends and acquaintances. “We noticed this data was missing from the algo and it made your friends appear less in your replies. This resulted in the reply section feeling more like a battleground with people you don’t recognize,” Bier explained.
While this modification may not represent a complete overhaul of the user experience, it is intended to shift the platform’s atmosphere away from a chaotic stream of disconnected voices and toward a more cohesive, community-focused space. Furthermore, Bier noted that this change is expected to facilitate the formation of interest-based clusters, a feature frequently requested by the user base.
Shifting Focus Toward Creators
This update is the latest in a series of initiatives aimed at transforming X into a more robust hub for content creators. Earlier this year, the platform revised its compensation model to prioritize original content over aggregation. Additionally, the recent launch of a native video editor underscores the company’s commitment to improving creator workflows.
The Competitive Landscape
The move to prioritize community-driven interactions follows similar algorithmic adjustments at Meta’s Threads. As Threads seeks to differentiate itself from X, it recently introduced a “Your Algo” feature, granting users greater autonomy over their feed curation. Threads has also reported significant growth, recently reaching the milestone of 500 million monthly active users.
