X Launches Completely Rebuilt Android App After Year-Long Wait

X has officially launched a completely rebuilt version of its Android application, marking the end of a year-long development effort to address the performance gaps between its Android and iOS experiences. The company shipped the updated app on Monday, which is now available for download.

A Ground-Up Overhaul for Performance

The new Android version of X was built from scratch, moving away from the legacy codebase to offer significant improvements in loading speeds, scrolling fluidity, and notification reliability, according to the company’s official announcement.

Development of this update began nearly a year ago. Last August, Nikita Bier, head of product at X, revealed that the company was putting together an Android “dream team” to overhaul the platform. The urgency of the project was highlighted in October, when the company noted one of its highest-ever weeks for Android downloads, cementing the need for a modern, stable application.

Engineering at Scale

Bier described the project as one of the largest engineering feats in the company’s history, emphasizing that the application was rebuilt entirely rather than simply patched. The team utilized a clean Kotlin and Jetpack Compose stack to modernize the infrastructure.

“It’s faster, smoother and more reliable. But most of all: it will enable us to build new features at lightning speed,” Bier stated. This transition comes as X continues to expand its ecosystem with services like X Money and X Chat.

Global Market Reach and Future Roadmap

By modernizing the Android experience, X aims to reclaim users in global markets where Android is the dominant operating system. The platform had previously suffered from significant neglect, with documented issues so severe that, at one point last year, the app failed to load posts when users clicked external links.

While the current release is a major milestone, Bier noted that development is ongoing. The team is currently working to iron out performance issues on older hardware and is actively adding support for Spaces, the platform’s live audio feature. Furthermore, Bier confirmed that upcoming updates will bring the video editor, react-with-video functionality, cashtags, and custom timelines to the Android ecosystem.

Existing users can access the new experience by updating their application via the Google Play Store.
