Vertu has officially launched the Alphafold, a high-end foldable smartphone priced at $6,880, designed specifically to serve as a mobile command center for CEOs. The device, which begins shipping this week to major global markets including the U.S., marks a strategic push to integrate advanced AI-agent workflows into a premium, productivity-focused hardware form factor.
Evolution Beyond the Agent Q
The Alphafold serves as the successor to the company’s previous venture, the Agent Q, a clamshell-style foldable launched last year. While the Agent Q focused on initial AI automation, company leadership notes that the Alphafold represents a significant technological leap. According to internal statements, the rapid maturation of AI-agent technology over the past twelve months has allowed for substantial improvements in memory retention, autonomous task execution, and seamless app integration.
The State of the Foldable Market
Despite heavy investment from industry giants like Samsung and Huawei, foldable smartphones remain a niche category. Data from IDC indicates that while 20 million foldables were shipped globally in 2025, this represents less than 2% of the total smartphone market. Furthermore, the average price point for these devices sat at approximately $1,300—roughly triple the cost of standard smartphones—placing Vertu’s $6,880 offering in an ultra-luxury tier.
Can AI Drive Enterprise Adoption?
Industry experts remain cautious about the intersection of foldables and enterprise AI. Kiranjeet Kaur, associate research director for mobile phone research at IDC, suggests that while the expansive displays of foldables are inherently better suited for multitasking and complex workflows, the corporate sector is not yet fully convinced. Kaur notes that enterprise adoption of smartphone AI continues to lag behind desktop integration, as corporate procurement decisions are still primarily driven by ecosystem compatibility and device management support rather than standalone AI capabilities.
The initial production run of 115 units of the Alphafold is currently entering the distribution phase for its global rollout.
