Spotify announced on Thursday that its interactive AI DJ feature has officially expanded its linguistic capabilities, adding support for French, German, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese. Previously, the tool—which provides AI-generated spoken commentary and handles song requests—was restricted exclusively to English and Spanish.
New Personalities for Global Users
To ensure a localized experience, the company introduced distinct names and personas tailored to each new language: Maia, Ben, Alex, and Dani. These unique identities are designed to resonate with listeners in their respective regions.
Global Rollout and Availability
Alongside the language updates, Spotify is launching the feature in eight new markets: Austria, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, South Korea, and Switzerland. With this expansion, the AI DJ is now accessible to users in more than 75 countries worldwide.
Evolution Toward Conversational AI
Initially, Spotify’s AI DJ functioned primarily as a curated radio host, offering commentary on tracks tailored to individual user tastes. However, the platform has evolved significantly to prioritize interactivity. In May 2025, the streaming service upgraded the feature to allow users to engage in direct dialogue with the AI, enabling them to request mood or genre shifts in real-time. This update mirrors the conversational capabilities seen in advanced models like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, allowing users to prompt the DJ for specific tracks.
A Broader AI Strategy
This rollout is part of Spotify’s wider initiative to integrate generative AI across its platform. Beyond the DJ feature, the company continues to deploy tools that allow users to generate custom playlists for both music and podcasts simply by describing their desired listening experience.
