After expanding its catalog with color-display tablets like the Paper Pro and the smaller Paper Pro Move, E Ink specialist reMarkable is pivoting back to its roots. The company has officially unveiled the Paper Pure, a new monochrome tablet designed to reclaim the simplicity of the original paper-writing experience.
A Modern Upgrade to a Fan Favorite
Priced at $399, the Paper Pure arrives as the long-awaited successor to the reMarkable 2, which held its ground for six years. While it maintains the minimalist monochrome aesthetic, it packs significantly upgraded hardware and modern software integrations to remain relevant in a competitive tablet market.
The device features a 10.3-inch display—matching the diagonal size of its predecessor—but adopts a wider form factor that the manufacturer claims improves both reading and note-taking ergonomics. The resolution remains consistent at 1872 x 1404 pixels, maintaining a pixel density of 226 PPI.
Storage has received a massive boost, jumping to 32GB—four times the capacity of the previous model. Despite the hardware upgrades, the device is lighter than its predecessor, weighing in at just 360 grams.
Performance and Connectivity Enhancements
Under the hood, the Paper Pure boasts a 50% increase in responsiveness compared to its predecessor. Battery life has also seen a significant uptick, with a 3,820 mAh battery providing 30% more usage time.
Software functionality has been overhauled to support modern workflows. The device now includes a dedicated web app, allowing users to sync calendars, share meeting notes, and import documents from cloud services, which are automatically reformatted for on-tablet reading and annotation. Additionally, the tablet features improved handwriting search capabilities.
Integration is a core focus of the new device: it now connects directly with Slack, enabling users to convert handwritten notes into typed text for sharing, and with Miro, facilitating the sharing of sketches and collaborative visuals.
Availability and Market Strategy
As the Paper Pure enters the market, the Norwegian manufacturer plans to phase out production of the reMarkable 2, though it has committed to providing ongoing software updates and support for existing users.
The base model comes with a standard stylus, while a $449 bundle includes the “Marker Plus”—which features a built-in eraser—and a protective sleeve folio in various colors. Customers can order the device starting today, with shipments expected to begin in early June.
To date, reMarkable has sold over 3.5 million devices. Its subscription service, Connect, currently boasts 1.2 million subscribers who benefit from unlimited cloud storage, exclusive templates, and advanced sharing features.
