OpenAI is reportedly shifting its hardware strategy beyond earbuds, with industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealing that the AI giant is exploring the development of a proprietary smartphone. The initiative, potentially involving collaborations with MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Luxshare, aims to redefine mobile interaction by replacing traditional applications with autonomous AI agents.
A Strategic Hardware Alliance
Kuo, a reliable source known for his deep insights into Apple’s supply chain, reports that OpenAI is looking to forge a powerful hardware ecosystem. The plan involves developing a custom smartphone chip in partnership with industry titans MediaTek and Qualcomm. Additionally, Luxshare is expected to serve as the co-design and manufacturing partner for the device, signaling a serious commitment to entering the competitive hardware market.
Replacing Apps with AI Agents
The core innovation of this proposed device lies in its software architecture. Rather than relying on a traditional app-based interface, the phone would utilize AI agents to execute tasks directly. Currently, tech giants like Apple and Google gatekeep the app ecosystem, limiting the scope of what AI can achieve on mobile devices. By controlling the entire hardware stack, OpenAI could bypass these restrictions, integrating AI deeply into every facet of the user experience. Kuo notes that the device would be engineered to continuously interpret user context. By owning the hardware, OpenAI would gain unprecedented access to behavioral data, far exceeding what a standard third-party app could collect. The device is expected to leverage a hybrid approach, utilizing a combination of small on-device models for privacy and speed, paired with powerful cloud models to manage complex processing requirements.
Timeline and Development
The specifications for the smartphone and the final selection of component suppliers are slated to be finalized between late 2025 and the first quarter of 2027. If the project proceeds, mass production is currently projected to commence in 2028.
Earlier this year, Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, confirmed that the company is on track to reveal its first hardware product in the second half of 2026. While several reports previously suggested this device might be a pair of AI-driven earbuds, the new insights from Kuo suggest the company’s ambitions are expanding significantly.
