OpenAI has officially acquired TBPN (Technology Business Programming Network), marking the AI giant’s first-ever acquisition of a media company. The popular tech industry talk show will now operate under the oversight of OpenAI’s chief political operative, Chris Lehane.
A Silicon Valley Powerhouse
Hosted by former tech founders John Coogan and Jordi Hays, TBPN delivers three hours of daily live programming across YouTube and X. The show has cultivated a dedicated following in Silicon Valley, functioning as a high-stakes forum where industry leaders like Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, Marc Benioff, and Sam Altman engage in candid, unfiltered discussions.
TBPN will continue to operate as an independent brand, with OpenAI providing resources to scale its operations. The show has already seen significant commercial success, currently on track to generate more than $30 million in annual revenue, according to The Wall Street Journal.
This acquisition complements OpenAI’s existing podcast, which focuses on long-form content featuring the company’s internal developers.
Strategic Influence and Marketing
Beyond the show’s content, OpenAI intends to leverage the founders’ marketing expertise. Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s head of AGI deployment, noted that the TBPN team will help the company communicate the real-world impact of AI to a global audience. Simo emphasized that the show’s unique approach is essential for a company like OpenAI, where traditional corporate communication strategies often fall short.

Simo confirmed that TBPN will retain editorial independence, retaining full control over its programming, guest selection, and editorial decisions.
The Political Dimension
The acquisition has raised questions regarding the intersection of media and corporate strategy, particularly as OpenAI approaches a potential IPO. By placing TBPN under the strategy team led by Chris Lehane, the company gains a figure known for his sophisticated political navigation. Lehane, who famously managed press scrutiny for the Clinton White House and spearheaded the crypto industry’s Fairshake super PAC, has become a key influence at OpenAI.
Since joining the company in 2024, Lehane has been involved in shaping policy discussions, including advocating for federal preemption of state AI regulations and easing environmental restrictions to accelerate data center construction.
Leadership Perspectives
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who publicly identified TBPN as his favorite tech show, maintains that the acquisition will not stifle the show’s critical voice. In a social media post, Altman remarked, “I don’t expect them to go any easier on us, am sure I’ll do my part to help enable that with occasional stupid decisions.”
For the TBPN founders, the deal represents an opportunity to shift from commentary to tangible industry influence. “While we’ve been critical of the industry at times, after getting to know Sam and the OpenAI team, what stood out most was their openness to feedback and commitment to getting this right,” said Jordi Hays. “Moving from commentary to real impact in how this technology is distributed and understood globally is incredibly important to us.”
