Long before ascending to the office of New York City’s 112th mayor, Zohran Mamdani recognized a fundamental truth of modern campaigning: to capture the attention of younger voters, you must engage them where they live—online.
A Direct Line to New Yorkers
Mamdani is pushing this digital-first strategy to new heights. As Polygon recently reported, the mayor has launched a recurring Twitch livestream series titled “Talk with the People.” The series premiered on Thursday, May 21, at 4:10 p.m. ET, featuring a live Q&A session where Mamdani addressed viewer inquiries directly from the chat. The broadcast was simulcast across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, and Bluesky.
The debut drew over 10,000 live viewers, establishing a rare, unfiltered connection between a high-ranking official and his digital constituency. The stream featured a surprise appearance by influencer Moose, who helped the mayor navigate the nuances of Twitch culture—including the customary practice of addressing the audience simply as “chat.”

Policy Meets Pop Culture
While the efficacy of Twitch as a venue for serious policy debate remains a point of contention, the platform facilitated a relaxed environment. Mamdani engaged with viewers on topics ranging from his hopes for a Knicks victory to a heated debate over the city’s best tacos, giving shoutouts to Los Tacos No. 1 and Taqueria Ramirez. Substantive policy issues were not sidelined, however; the mayor discussed tax hikes on the wealthy and his agenda for faster, free public bus transit, specifically outlining plans to shave six minutes off current routes.
The Evolution of Political Communication
Mamdani’s foray into streaming underscores a massive shift in how political information is consumed. Younger demographics are increasingly turning away from traditional media, opting instead for content delivered by creators, streamers, and podcasters. Twitch, once strictly a gaming hub, has matured into a powerful political arena, hosting real-time discussions on current events led by figures like Hasan Piker. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez famously utilized the platform in 2020, leveraging Among Us livestreams to mobilize young voters.
“By launching the country’s first recurring cross-platform stream hosted by an elected official, where I’ll answer New Yorkers’ questions live on Twitch, we’re opening up a direct line of conversation between our government and the people, especially younger generations who’ve been ignored for too long,” Mamdani stated to Polygon.
Modern Fireside Chats
The mayor teased the launch on Instagram with a cryptic “5.21.26. 4:10 PM. Live” post, which included a reference to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s iconic fireside chats. The comparison is calculated: just as FDR harnessed the reach of radio to speak directly into American homes, Mamdani is leveraging the dominant communication medium of the current era to minimize the distance between the government and the governed.
This digital accessibility has been a hallmark of Mamdani’s career. Before becoming mayor, he built his reputation as a New York State Assembly member in Astoria by demystifying complex topics like housing policy and affordability through viral, plain-language videos. Today, he commands one of the most formidable social media footprints in urban politics, boasting over 15 million combined followers across Instagram, TikTok, and X.
