Meta is currently engineering an AI-powered pendant, with internal testing slated to begin within the next year, as revealed in a corporate memo viewed by The Information.
Leveraging Recent Acquisitions
The development of this wearable is expected to integrate core technology from Limitless, an AI startup acquired by Meta in late 2025. Limitless previously gained attention for its own AI pendant, a device designed to be worn as a necklace or clipped to clothing to capture and process user conversations. At the time of the acquisition, Meta confirmed that the move was intended to accelerate its strategic push into AI-enabled hardware.
The Challenge of AI Wearables
The consumer market has historically been skeptical of AI wearables, often citing privacy anxieties, ineffective marketing, or a lack of genuine utility as primary barriers to adoption. Despite these industry-wide hurdles, major players like OpenAI continue to double down on the category, signaling a belief that the technology has yet to reach its full potential.
Expanding the Hardware Ecosystem
Beyond the new pendant, the internal memo outlines plans to scale Meta’s existing lineup of AI-integrated glasses. The company is also preparing to launch “Wearables for Work,” a new business-focused subscription service. These initiatives represent a concerted effort to improve the financial performance of the Reality Labs division, which reported a $4 billion loss in the first quarter of this year.
