Prometheus, a physical AI startup co-founded by Jeff Bezos and former Verily executive Vik Bajaj, has officially secured $12 billion in funding, reaching a staggering $41 billion valuation. The massive capital injection was led by Bezos alongside major financial institutions, including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and BlackRock.
A Strategic Second Round of Growth
This latest financing marks the second major round for Prometheus, which debuted late last year with an initial $6.2 billion raise, according to CNBC.
The Vision: An Artificial General Engineer
At its core, Prometheus is developing an “artificial general engineer.” This software is designed to autonomously handle the design and manufacturing of intricate physical systems, ranging from advanced jet engines to complex pharmaceutical compounds.
The startup’s goal is to automate vast segments of the engineering profession. Despite concerns regarding AI-driven job displacement, Bezos maintains a contrarian view, suggesting that productivity gains will trigger “labor scarcity”—a scenario where the demand for human talent exceeds the available supply.
“Significant productivity in the economy is going to raise the standard of living,” Bezos stated. “People who today have two-earner households will become one-earner households. Perhaps those currently working overtime will no longer need to.”

Operations and Scaling
Currently operating with 150 employees across San Francisco, London, and Zurich, the company remains tight-lipped regarding its specific technological breakthroughs. Bezos noted that a substantial portion of the new funding will be directed toward meeting the startup’s massive computational requirements.
Bezos brings significant experience in large-scale labor management to the table. As executive chairman and the largest shareholder of Amazon—a company that employs over 1.5 million people—he has overseen a period where the firm, under CEO Andy Jassy, has cut tens of thousands of roles while aggressively expanding its internal automation initiatives.
The Rise of Physical AI
With a $41 billion valuation, Prometheus stands as one of the most valuable AI startups in history and represents a monumental bet on the physical AI sector. The company is part of a broader trend, as venture capitalists increasingly favor physical AI startups, arguing that the integration of hardware and code creates a competitive moat that software-only firms cannot replicate.
