Instagram is aggressively expanding its footprint in the living room by introducing longer-form content, episodic series, and Live TV formats to its dedicated television application. This strategic pivot marks a significant attempt by the social media giant to transition from a mobile-first platform to a direct competitor against established streaming titans like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Challenging the Streaming Giants
The platform’s push into high-end, serialized content follows recent testing of a new “Series” feature for Reels on Instagram and Facebook, designed to streamline how users consume multi-part content. By bringing these experiences to the TV screen, Instagram aims to capture audience attention in the home environment, moving beyond the short-form dominance it has long contested against TikTok and YouTube.

Expanded Accessibility and New Features
Accessibility is a key pillar of this expansion. Instagram confirmed that its TV app is now rolling out to Samsung TVs, joining existing availability on Amazon Fire and Google TV devices. The updated application introduces several user-centric features, including curated channels, casting capabilities, and native support for horizontal video and Stories.
Upon launching the app, viewers are presented with channels tailored to specific interests—such as sports, comedy, or individual creator content—designed to facilitate communal viewing experiences. Furthermore, the introduction of a dedicated section for horizontal videos provides the necessary infrastructure to support high-quality, long-form media consumption.
Users can now cast Reels and content from their “Saved” tab directly from their mobile devices to their television sets. Additionally, the app has expanded its viewing capabilities to include Stories, providing a more comprehensive Instagram experience on the big screen compared to its previously limited Reels-only focus.
