Google is officially re-entering the smart glasses market, pivoting toward an audio-centric approach to wearable artificial intelligence.
During the Google I/O event this Tuesday, the tech giant unveiled a strategic partnership with fashion-forward eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. This collaboration aims to launch a new line of AI-powered glasses designed in conjunction with Samsung. The devices are engineered to pair seamlessly with both Android and iOS ecosystems and are slated for a commercial release later this year.
The Rise of Audio-First AI Glasses
Google is positioning these new devices as “audio glasses.” The core functionality allows users to interact with the device through verbal commands, streamlining tasks by leveraging Google’s suite of apps and services, with deep integration into the Gemini AI model.

During a live demonstration, a Google representative showcased the device’s efficiency by ordering coffee online through a simple voice prompt. Once synced with the user’s smartphone, the glasses execute these commands autonomously.
Learning from Past Hardware Challenges
Google’s history with smart eyewear is complex. The company previously made headlines with the launch of Google Glass, a project that struggled with public perception and eventually gave rise to the infamous “glassholes” moniker.
The landscape for wearable technology has evolved significantly since that era. Today, major industry players—most notably Meta—alongside a growing cohort of startups, have successfully revitalized interest in the smart glasses category, focusing on lifestyle integration rather than intrusive displays.
