Elon Musk has received regulatory clearance from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to proceed with the acquisition of Mesh Optical Technologies, a startup founded last year by three former SpaceX engineers specializing in high-speed data center communications.
FTC Fast-Tracks Antitrust Review
The potential acquisition was disclosed in an official Federal Trade Commission filing. As first reported by Bloomberg, the agency opted to expedite its antitrust review process, clearing the path for the deal to move forward.
From Starlink to Data Center Innovation
Mesh Optical emerged from stealth mode in February, securing $50 million in a Series A funding round led by Thrive Capital. The company was established by Travis Brashears, Cameron Ramos, and Serena Grown-Haeberli—the same engineering team responsible for developing the optical communication links that maintain the interconnected network of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite constellation.
The founders identified a significant market gap in terrestrial data centers. By focusing on optical transceivers, Mesh leverages light-based hardware, which offers superior speed and energy efficiency compared to traditional electrical-based systems.
Strategic Impact on SpaceX Infrastructure
SpaceX has recently pivoted toward expanding its compute capacity, entering into strategic agreements with major players including Anthropic, Google, and open-source AI developer Reflection AI. These partnerships have created a lucrative new revenue stream for the company.
Integrating Mesh Optical into its operations could allow SpaceX to drastically optimize the performance of its data centers. This technological leap is expected to enhance infrastructure efficiency, whether those facilities remain grounded on Earth or are deployed in space-based environments in the future.
