Voice AI leader ElevenLabs has officially launched Music v2, a sophisticated generative model capable of switching genres mid-track. Debuting roughly 10 months after the company’s initial foray into AI music, this upgrade is engineered to handle intricate vocal performances and complex musical compositions with greater precision.
Genre-Blending and Precision Editing
The updated model offers significant creative flexibility, allowing transitions between disparate styles—such as moving from opera to heavy metal and returning seamlessly. Beyond genre-shifting, the AI maintains coherence during rapid-fire rap segments and can integrate non-musical sound effects into a composition. Users now have the ability to isolate specific sections of a track and regenerate them via text prompts without affecting the surrounding audio.
Modular Composition and Reliability
Moving away from the limitation of short, static clips, ElevenLabs has introduced a modular workflow. Artists can now build songs section by section—crafting distinct intros, verses, and choruses—before stitching them into a final arrangement. The company reports that this iteration offers improved reliability across multiple languages, lyrical structures, and vocal arrangements.
The Competitive Landscape of AI Music
The release arrives amid a fierce race among AI laboratories to produce professional-grade audio. Major players including Google, Stability AI, and Suno are aggressively updating their models to support longer, more complex tracks. Notably, at the recent Google I/O developer conference, the company introduced Flow Music, a tool designed to facilitate song covers, section-based editing, and music video generation.
Commercial Safety and Legal Standing
ElevenLabs maintains that Music v2 is built exclusively on licensed data, ensuring the output is cleared for commercial use. This focus on compliance is a strategic differentiator as competitors like Suno and Udio face ongoing copyright litigation. Securing industry deals with major labels remains a critical hurdle for the sector.
Availability
Music v2 is currently accessible via the ElevenCreative tool, tailored for marketing and branding professionals, and the newly unveiled ElevenMusic platform. Support for the model via ElevenAPI is expected to roll out in the near future.
