Global streaming platform Deezer announced on Wednesday the debut of “Remix Lab.” This new feature empowers fans to create official remixes with the explicit consent of artists and rights holders, ensuring that creators are financially compensated for every stream generated by these fan-made versions.
Beyond AI: A Human-Centric Approach
Accessible directly via select artist pages within the app, Remix Lab moves away from the automated AI trends seen elsewhere. Pierre Trochu, head of product at Deezer, explained in a recent blog post that the tool provides in-app functionality for adjusting tempo and adding reverb, as well as enabling more complex transformations like shifts in musical genre and style.
This strategy stands in stark contrast to competitors. While YouTube allows creators to use AI for remixing and Spotify has partnered with Universal Music Group for AI-generated covers, critics argue that such AI-heavy approaches risk overshadowing human musicians and complicating their ability to gain visibility.
Deezer’s Stance Against AI Saturation
Deezer has consistently positioned itself against the unchecked proliferation of AI in music. The company recently deployed a detection tool capable of identifying AI-generated tracks across major streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music. Furthermore, the platform actively filters AI-generated content out of its editorial playlists and recommendation engines.
“This remix tool perfectly embodies our vision of offering a product that enriches the listening experience for fans, by allowing them to participate in the creative process and create a deeper connection with their favorite music, directly in the Deezer app,” CEO Alexis Lanternier stated. “True to our DNA, these features are made possible with full participation of the artists, fully respecting rights, and maximizing earnings for each track.”
Global Rollout and Future Potential
Although Remix Lab is currently limited to France, with future international expansion plans remaining vague, the feature marks a significant departure from industry norms. If successful, it could prove that the music industry does not necessarily need to rely solely on AI-driven content to engage audiences.
The feature currently allows users to remix tracks from prominent French artists, including Céline Dion, Alain Souchon, Alonzo, Ronisia, Mosimann, Tiakola, and Zaho.

To encourage adoption, Deezer is hosting contests through the Deezer Club, with winners to be revealed in early September. Winning remixes will earn a spot on a dedicated playlist, and winners will receive two tickets to a Deezer Purple Door event, accompanied by exclusive artist merchandise.
