X is officially tightening its monetization rules, significantly reducing payments to accounts that clutter the platform with clickbait and rapid-fire news aggregation. The move was confirmed by Nikita Bier, the platform’s head of product.
Cracking Down on “Bait” Content
Bier announced on Saturday that all news aggregators saw their payouts slashed by 40% this cycle, with an additional 20% reduction scheduled for the next pay period. Furthermore, the Elon Musk-owned network is targeting “habitual bait posters” who consistently misuse the “🚨BREAKING” tag to artificially inflate engagement.
“It became abundantly clear: flooding the timeline with 100 stolen reposts and clickbait everyday crowded-out real creators and hurt new author growth,” Bier stated. He emphasized that while X remains committed to free speech, it will not compensate users for manipulating the program or the platform’s audience.
Creators Push Back Against Demonetization
The policy shift follows reports from several conservative news accounts that received notifications regarding their sudden demonetization, as noted by various media outlets.
Dominick McGee, known as Dom Lucre, publicly protested the decision, claiming he was demonetized without clear explanation despite his high activity levels. McGee, who previously told The New York Times he earned $55,000 annually from the platform, has a history of controversy, including a temporary ban in 2023 for spreading election-related conspiracy theories.
In a rebuttal to Bier, McGee argued that his high volume of posts does not equate to clickbait. However, other X users challenged this defense by pointing to a community note highlighting that McGee had used the “BREAKING” tag 91 times in the past week alone.
Collateral Damage and Ecosystem Concerns
The crackdown has sparked anxiety among some creators who fear they have been wrongly flagged. An account operating as PoliMath expressed concern after receiving their lowest payout in a long time, worried they had been unfairly categorized as an “aggregator” despite not fitting the description.
This policy adjustment occurs amidst broader criticism regarding X’s current state. Data analyst Nate Silver recently sparked debate by highlighting the dominance of right-wing accounts and the difficulty of driving traffic off-platform. While Bier and Musk have dismissed Silver’s findings as inaccurate, independent research and other industry analyses have largely corroborated his claims regarding the platform’s broken ecosystem.
