YouTube announced this week a significant shift in its ad strategy: the platform will now automatically suppress advertisements during livestreams when chat engagement hits a peak. Previously, ad-free viewing was exclusively reserved for YouTube Premium subscribers.
Protecting the Livestream Experience
In a recent blog post, the Google-owned platform explained that when a chat reaches a high level of intensity, it aims to “protect that collective vibe.” By leveraging automated systems to detect spikes in engagement, YouTube will pause ad delivery for all viewers, ensuring the creator’s momentum remains uninterrupted.
Rewarding Fan Support
Beyond automated pauses, YouTube is incentivizing direct viewer contributions. When a fan uses Super Chat, Super Stickers, or purchases gifts, they will be granted an immediate, personal ad-free window. For context, Super Chat allows users to pay for highlighted messages, while Super Stickers provide visual elements to make fan comments stand out in the stream.
Expanding Creator Tools and Global Reach
These ad adjustments are part of a broader suite of updates for live creators. YouTube confirmed that gift functionality is expanding significantly, now available to creators in Canada, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand. Furthermore, mobile users can now send GIFs during horizontal livestreams, expanding options beyond vertical content.
Creators also gain new flexibility with the ability to broadcast in vertical and horizontal formats simultaneously, consolidating all viewers into one unified chat. This change addresses shifting consumption habits, as over 30% of U.S. live watch time in 2025 originated from connected TVs, prompting the need for multi-screen optimization.

These updates arrive shortly after YouTube increased U.S. subscription costs for YouTube Premium. The individual plan has risen from $13.99 to $15.99 per month, while the family plan saw an increase from $22.99 to $26.99 per month.
