JioHotstar, the streaming platform operated by the Reliance Industries conglomerate, announced on Wednesday a major expansion of its partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery to bring HBO Max content directly to Indian viewers.
Affordable Access to Premium Content
Starting at just ₹49 (approximately $0.50) per month, HBO Max will be available as an add-on for JioHotstar subscribers. This package provides access to a vast library, including content from HBO, Max Originals, Warner Bros. Pictures, Warner Bros. Television, and DC Studios. This pricing strategy represents a significant discount compared to the U.S. market, where the standalone HBO Max Basic tier is priced at $10.99 per month.
JioHotstar confirmed to TechCrunch that the user experience will be tiered based on existing subscription plans, suggesting that lower-cost options may include advertisements. Currently, JioHotstar’s base service starts at ₹79 (about $0.85) per month for ad-supported mobile access, scaling up to ₹299 (about $3.20) per month for an ad-free premium experience.
India’s Booming Streaming Landscape
The Indian streaming market is experiencing explosive growth, currently boasting approximately 1.45 billion monthly active users (MAUs). This surge is largely driven by the widespread availability of affordable mobile data and the rapid adoption of smartphones, as highlighted in a recent report by brokerage firm CLSA. Within this competitive landscape, YouTube leads with 772 million MAUs, while JioHotstar holds the second position with roughly 390 million MAUs.
Despite this growth, market penetration remains uneven across the country. Data from the consultancy Third Bridge indicates that streaming usage is significantly lower outside of major metropolitan areas, hovering between 23% and 27% in Tier 2 markets and dropping to 7% to 8% in Tier 3 towns. Industry insights suggest that the majority of users in these regions prefer bundled service offerings over direct, standalone subscriptions.
High-Profile Titles Coming to India
The integration of the HBO Max hub will grant Indian audiences access to a curated selection of highly anticipated global hits and fan-favorite titles. The lineup includes the third season of “Euphoria,” the next chapter of “House of the Dragon,” the DC Studios series “Lanterns,” and the upcoming Harry Potter television adaptation, among other Warner Bros. productions.
