Google is fundamentally transforming the YouTube search experience by integrating AI-powered conversational tools. Starting today, U.S. desktop users with Premium subscriptions can access “Ask YouTube,” a new feature designed to provide sophisticated, context-aware answers by synthesizing content from both Shorts and long-form videos.
Conversational Search Comes to YouTube
The new tool moves beyond simple keyword matching, allowing users to pose complex queries directly to the platform. According to Google, users can ask for specific advice—such as guidance on teaching a child to ride a bike—or request curated recommendations, like finding creator reviews for “cozy games” to play before sleep. The system supports follow-up questions, enabling users to refine their search results dynamically.

Premium subscribers in the U.S. can access the feature immediately via YouTube’s offerings page for experimental tools.
Gemini Omni Integration for Creators
Beyond search, YouTube is integrating Gemini Omni—Google’s advanced AI video model—into YouTube Shorts Remix and the YouTube Create app. The company states that this model is designed to better understand user intent, resulting in more consistent and coherent storytelling. By handling complex audio and video adjustments in the background, the AI aims to streamline the creative process for Shorts users.
Addressing AI Ethics and Deepfakes
As competitors like Meta and OpenAI navigate the complex landscape of AI-generated content, YouTube is taking a measured approach. Simultaneously, the platform is expanding its likeness-detection tool to all creators aged 18 and older. This security feature allows creators to request the removal of videos that use AI to misrepresent their likeness. While this represents a significant step in combating unauthorized deepfakes, the long-term effectiveness of the tool remains to be tested as it rolls out to a wider user base.
