After a 15-year tenure, Tim Cook is officially passing the baton to John Ternus, Apple’s current senior vice president of hardware engineering. Effective September 1, Ternus will take the helm of one of the world’s most influential and valuable corporations. While he has been a driving force behind the scenes for years, Ternus remains a relatively unfamiliar face to the general public, having largely operated outside the media spotlight.
A Quarter-Century at Apple
At 51 years old, John Ternus has spent half of his life at Apple, marking 25 years of service to the tech giant.
His journey began in 2001 when he joined the product design team—only his second professional role following a stint at the virtual-reality startup Virtual Research Systems. His trajectory was steady and impressive: by 2013, he had ascended to VP of hardware engineering, eventually being promoted to SVP in 2021.
Ternus, who is 15 years younger than Cook, was long considered the frontrunner among the younger executive tier. His appointment suggests that Apple is prioritizing long-term leadership stability; given that the company has seen only two CEOs in the new millennium, continuity remains a core pillar of their corporate strategy.
Currently, Ternus reports directly to Cook—whom he views as a mentor—and oversees the entirety of Apple’s hardware engineering. This is a massive responsibility for a company defined by ubiquitous hardware staples like the iPhone and the MacBook.
In a 2024 commencement address at the University of Pennsylvania, his alma mater, Ternus offered a rare glimpse into his professional philosophy:
“Always assume you’re as smart as anyone else in the room, but never assume that you know as much as they do,” Ternus noted in his speech. “With this mindset, you’ll find the confidence you need to push forward, but more importantly, the humility to ask questions.”
In a tech industry often defined by outsized egos, Ternus’s emphasis on humility stands out—as does his notable absence from platforms like X.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship
Ternus’s early days at Apple were defined by rigorous, granular attention to detail—such as scrutinizing components for the Apple Cinema Display.
“At some point in my first year, I found myself at a supplier facility… I was using a magnifying glass to count the number of grooves on the head of a screw… and I was arguing with the supplier because these parts had 35 grooves. They were supposed to have 25,” Ternus recalled. “I distinctly remember stepping back for a minute and thinking, ‘What the hell am I doing? Is this normal?’”
While his role has evolved, that obsession with detail remains. In a recent interview, Ternus shared a story about Steve Jobs, who once inspected the back of a chest of drawers to appreciate the hidden craftsmanship—a philosophy Ternus says exemplifies Apple’s approach to design.
Throughout his tenure, he has overseen the development of major ecosystem products, including the AirPods, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro. He also played a critical role in the company’s massive technical pivot from Intel processors to proprietary Apple silicon.
More recently, he spearheaded the production of the MacBook Neo, an affordable laptop that utilizes iPhone-style chip architecture to lower costs without sacrificing the brand’s signature experience.
“We never want to ship junk… To do that with the Neo required building something completely new from the ground up,” Ternus told Tom’s Guide. As he steps into the CEO role, his primary challenges will include navigating the competitive AI race and determining the long-term roadmap for the Vision Pro’s underlying technology.
Beyond the Boardroom
Ternus’s background is rooted in engineering and community impact; during his time on the swim team at Penn, his senior project involved building a feeding arm for individuals with quadriplegia, controlled by head movements.
According to public records, his political engagement includes a $2,900 donation to Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in 2021. Outside of these details, Ternus continues to maintain a remarkably low-key public profile.
