Plex is pivoting beyond its roots as a personal media server to challenge social platforms like Reddit and Letterboxd. On Wednesday, the company introduced a suite of social-centric features designed to transform how its 42 million monthly active users interact, discover content, and discuss entertainment directly within the app.
Building a Community-Driven Hub
The flagship addition is “Discussions,” a community forum where users can engage in conversations about movies and TV shows. By integrating a moderation system that utilizes a blend of AI and human input to monitor visual and written interactions, Plex aims to create a dedicated space for fans to connect, potentially rivaling Reddit’s dominance in entertainment discourse.

New Discovery and Engagement Tools
Plex is also rolling out “Lists,” allowing users to curate, manage, and share collections of their favorite media. Unlike traditional star-rating systems, users can react with emojis and share images. Later this year, the platform will enable users to import lists from other services and interact with their friends’ curated collections.
To streamline content discovery, the new “Match Score” feature analyzes a user’s viewing history and ratings to provide a percentage-based prediction of how much they might enjoy a specific title. “The idea is to take the guesswork out of discovery,” said Scott Olechowski, Plex co-founder and chief product officer. The update is rounded out by “Alerts,” which notify users about activity regarding their favorite lists, movies, and industry professionals.
A Strategy Amidst Rising Costs
These social expansions arrive as Plex faces a fiercely competitive streaming landscape where giants like Netflix and Disney+ are increasingly incorporating social elements to boost engagement. While “Lists” is available now and “Discussions” launches later this month, these updates coincide with a controversial decision: a massive price hike for the Lifetime Plex Pass, which will jump to $749.99 starting July 1.
This significant increase follows a previous price adjustment just last year, when the cost rose from $119.99 to $249.99. As Plex expands its social ecosystem, it remains to be seen how its user base—spanning over 180 countries—will respond to the combination of new community features and the steeper cost of entry.
