Google announced on Wednesday a massive update for Google TV, integrating advanced Gemini-powered generative AI tools and a dedicated home screen feed for short-form video content.
Generative AI Comes to the Living Room
The update centers on expanding Gemini’s capabilities directly onto the television. A new “Create” button within the Gemini tab provides users with direct access to Google’s generative AI models, Nano Banana and Veo. Initially, these features are rolling out to Gemini-enabled TCL TVs in the United States, with plans for broader device support in the near future.
Nano Banana functions as a powerful image-generation and editing tool, allowing users to manipulate photos using simple voice commands. The feature is designed for collaborative living-room fun, enabling users to swap outfits, alter backgrounds, or generate entirely new scenes with playful prompts—such as asking the AI to place a family member in a ridiculous outfit.
Veo complements this by enabling users to create video clips from scratch or animate static images through descriptive scenarios. For example, users can command the AI to animate a scene like “make my grandfather moonwalk in space.”

Enhanced Google Photos Integration
Google Photos is also receiving a significant upgrade on the platform. Gemini-powered search now allows users to quickly locate specific memories—such as birthday parties or vacations—without manually scrolling through their entire library. The interface displays results in a browsable format, facilitating easy full-screen viewing or slideshow presentations. Furthermore, a new “Remix” feature allows users to apply artistic styles, including oil painting or watercolor, directly to their existing photos.
The update also introduces “Dynamic Slideshows,” which features animated layouts, frames, and color treatments. Users can activate this by selecting Google Photos within their screensaver settings to transform their personal collections into cinematic, TV-ready displays.

Short-Form Video Hits the Home Screen
Beyond generative AI, Google is doubling down on short-form content. A new “Short videos for you” row is coming to the Google TV home screen, featuring content sourced directly from YouTube Shorts.
This integration follows YouTube’s recent move to allow users to hide Shorts on mobile devices, highlighting a mixed reception to the format. However, Google has hinted that this home screen row could expand to include other platforms in the future. This follows the integration of the Instagram TV app on Google TV devices earlier this year.
