A new report from WordPress VIP reveals a growing disconnect between corporate AI adoption and consumer trust. While brands scramble to secure visibility in AI-driven search results, 60% of U.S. consumers report that explicit “AI” branding is a significant turnoff, highlighting a widening gap between automated efficiency and human-centric brand loyalty.
The Erosion of Digital Trust
The study, conducted by the Automattic-owned enterprise platform a new report, underscores that earning consumer confidence is becoming increasingly difficult. Data shows that 86% of users do not fully trust AI-generated content and remain committed to verifying information via original sources. In a striking comparison, 42% of respondents admitted that AI-generated answers lacking clear attribution are viewed with more suspicion than medical bills, complex privacy policies, or airline fees.
A Less Human Internet
The shift toward algorithmic content is taking a toll on the digital experience, with nearly 75% of respondents stating the internet feels “less human” than it did a decade ago. This sentiment presents a strategic dilemma for companies: they must optimize for AI search engines to remain discoverable while simultaneously maintaining a human touch to prevent audience attrition.
The Strategic Shift for Brands
Brian Alvey, CTO of WordPress VIP, emphasized the dual challenge facing modern businesses. “People used to build websites for other people,” Alvey noted. “Now you have to build websites for AI agents acting on behalf of those people. If your site’s content isn’t legible to AI, you are invisible to a growing share of how people search. You don’t exist. And if your content doesn’t feel human and trustworthy for the tiny percentage of people who actually click past the AI answer engines, they won’t come back a second time.”
Methodology and Market Realities
The findings are based on an April survey of 2,000 participants, including 1,200 U.S. adults and 800 enterprise decision-makers and CMOs. Despite the consumer skepticism, the business utility of AI is undeniable; 60% of enterprise respondents confirmed that traffic from AI answer platforms has increased over the past year. Consequently, 74% of decision-makers now view AI discoverability and proper content attribution as a primary strategic priority.
The Future of the Open Web
Transparency remains the ultimate currency for digital engagement. The report indicates that 33% of consumers identify clicking through to an original source as their most important trust signal. Furthermore, 80% of respondents advocate for an open web, insisting that information should remain accessible rather than being gated by a handful of large organizations. This aligns with the broader mission of the WordPress project and its support for open web protocols like ActivityPub.
