Google is officially pivoting its smart home strategy by integrating Gemini AI into its hardware lineup. On Wednesday, the company unveiled the new $99.99 Google Home Speaker, the first audio device engineered specifically to leverage the power of its advanced generative AI.
A New Era for Smart Speakers
This launch marks the tech giant’s first standalone smart speaker since the debut of the Nest Audio in September 2020. Previous iterations were largely limited to basic home automation and music playback, often requiring rigid, specific phrasing to execute commands effectively. The new Google Home Speaker moves away from these constraints, enabling users to interact using natural, conversational language.
The device is capable of handling complex, multistep requests. Users can now issue compound commands such as, “Turn off all the lights except for my bedside lamp,” or “Dim the kitchen lights, play some relaxing music, and set a timer for 20 minutes.”
Furthermore, Gemini’s processing power allows for mid-sentence corrections. If a user stumbles or changes their mind—such as saying, “Turn off the coffee maker… I mean, turn it on!”—the AI is designed to process the intent accurately without requiring the request to be restarted.
Conversational Depth and Hardware Design
The device features 10 new voice profiles capable of engaging in two-way, nuanced conversations that extend beyond simple smart home controls. Users can explore complex topics similarly to how they would using Gemini on a smartphone. Additionally, the “Continued Conversation” feature keeps the microphone active briefly, allowing for follow-up questions without the need to repeat the “OK, Google” wake word.
Aesthetically, the device retains a familiar look with its 3D-knit textile finish and compact 3.4 x 4.2-inch rounded frame. U.S. customers will have access to exclusive Jade and Berry colorways, while global markets will receive the standard Hazel and Porcelain options. A new ring light at the base provides visual feedback, indicating when the device is listening, processing, or responding.
The Premium AI Tier
While the hardware is competitively priced, Google is introducing a tiered subscription model. A “Google Home Premium” plan will be available for $10 per month (or $100 annually) to unlock advanced capabilities. This includes access to Gemini Live, which facilitates more fluid, back-and-forth interactions initiated by the command, “Hey, Google, let’s chat.”
Premium features also extend to security, allowing users to query the AI about activity captured on Nest cameras or receive automated summaries of home events that occurred while they were away.
Google plans to offer these premium features for free for the first six months to encourage user adoption. The device is currently available for preorder, with shipping scheduled to begin later this month.
