SpaceX, the aerospace leader that also encompasses Elon Musk’s AI venture, xAI, is evaluating a massive investment of at least $55 billion to construct a semiconductor manufacturing plant in Grimes County, Texas. According to a formal proposal filed with the county, the total expenditure for the project could eventually reach $119 billion.
Inside the Terafab Vision
The filing describes the ambitious undertaking as a “multi-phase, next-generation, vertically integrated semiconductor manufacturing and advanced computing fabrication facility.” Musk has previously outlined the plans for this project, codenamed “Terafab,” which will leverage resources from Tesla as well. The initiative includes a strategic partnership with chipmaking giant Intel, with the ultimate goal of producing specialized chips for AI servers, satellites, space-based data centers, and the autonomous systems powering Tesla vehicles and robotics.
Addressing the Global Chip Shortage
Musk maintains that the facility is essential to meeting the aggressive scaling requirements of his companies. He envisions the plant eventually outputting enough chips to provide 1 terawatt of power per year, arguing that current semiconductor manufacturers are failing to keep pace with the demands of artificial intelligence and robotics. “We either build the Terafab or we don’t have the chips, and we need the chips, so we build the Terafab,” Musk stated.
Strategic Expansion and Location Flexibility
Despite the specific filing in Texas, Musk clarified in a Tuesday tweet that Grimes County is merely one of several potential sites currently under consideration for the massive factory.
Powering the Future of xAI
The move highlights Musk’s urgent push to secure sufficient computing power to train and operate the Grok AI model series. By integrating xAI with SpaceX, Musk aims to capitalize on the soaring demand for AI compute capacity, specifically through the development of data centers in space. The combined entity currently holds an estimated valuation of $1.25 trillion and is reportedly slated for a public offering in June.
