Hank Green, the novelist, comedian, and YouTuber with 3.2 million subscribers, has issued a public apology following mounting criticism over his increasing reliance on AI chatbots for content creation.
The Trigger: A Scripting Slip-Up
The controversy ignited after Green appeared in a video on the educational channel Complexly. During the segment, he included the phrase “I appreciate the pushback,” an odd inclusion that led viewers to speculate he had accidentally pasted a response from an AI chatbot directly into his script.
In a now-deleted post on X, Green addressed the situation, explaining that he produced the video “under a ton of pressure” and utilized ChatGPT specifically for research. He clarified that the controversial phrase was intended as a response to the episode’s guest, rather than an AI artifact.
Accountability and Process Changes
Seeking to address the backlash more thoroughly, Green offered a more in-depth apology on Reddit. He expressed that he was “mortified” to have let his audience down and announced plans to reduce his overall video production output.
Green maintained that his use of ChatGPT was limited to locating academic papers and learning resources, insisting that his unique voice and perspectives remained his own. However, he conceded that it was valid for viewers to criticize him for “diluting” his creative process.
Concerns Regarding AI Technology
While clarifying that he is “not a pure AI-hater,” Green outlined several significant concerns regarding the industry. He highlighted the environmental impact of these tools and the rapid pace at which corporations are consolidating economic power through artificial intelligence.
“Ultimately, what I am most scared of is ruining myself for people, but I have not been managing my impulses well,” Green stated. “You need to know that my words are mine. I don’t think that this hasn’t been true, but I’ve been moving so fast that my own process isn’t actually clear to me and I want to have it be a guarantee moving forward.”
Moving Toward Authentic Content
To restore his creative integrity, Green intends to pause or slow down his upload schedule across his YouTube channels. He expressed a desire to return to projects similar to a recent meditative video, where the writing process was deeply personal and intentional. He also plans to favor unscripted, direct-to-camera content.
Reflecting on his habits, Green acknowledged the addictive nature of interacting with Large Language Models. “But mostly I need to come to terms with the fact that the level of dopamine I’ve been getting from interacting with LLMs…with doing more and more and more and more…is not healthy for me or good for the world,” Green said. “It is careless, and has disconnected me from where people are on this.”
