from Spotlight Rewards
CONTEUDO:
Snapchat is officially cracking down on low-quality AI content. The platform announced on Friday that it will no longer offer financial rewards or algorithmic promotion to videos that are entirely generated by artificial intelligence, prioritizing human-made content instead.
Prioritizing Human Creativity
In a recent announcement, Snapchat confirmed that its recommendation systems are being recalibrated. The goal is to ensure that only content crafted by real people qualifies for Spotlight recommendations and associated rewards.
The company stated that it intends for Spotlight to “remain a place where people can discover authentic creativity from real people.” Snapchat emphasized its belief in the “enduring value” of original perspectives, personal storytelling, and the unique moments that users capture and share themselves.
AI Tools Remain, But With Limits
Despite this policy shift, Snapchat is not banning AI entirely. The platform clarified that creators are still encouraged to use its internal AI creative tools to enhance, edit, or augment their videos.
This move is part of a larger strategy to refine the Spotlight experience. As early as April, the company indicated that it was actively working to reduce the presence of AI-generated content on the feed.
The Tech Industry’s War on “AI Slop”
Snapchat’s decision comes amid growing industry-wide scrutiny of “AI slop”—low-quality, synthetic content flooding social feeds. Other major platforms are also tightening their policies to combat this trend:
- LinkedIn: Recently introduced a reporting feature that allows users to flag posts as “seems like AI slop.”
- Substack: Launched tools to help readers identify AI-generated newsletters.
- Meta: Faced significant public backlash regarding an Instagram feature that allowed users to modify public photos with AI, forcing the company to remove the tool entirely.
- YouTube: Has intensified its crackdown on inauthentic content, explicitly barring monetization for generic, repetitive, or template-based AI videos, as well as AI personas discussing sensitive topics like finance and health.
Broader Safety Updates
The move to sanitize the Spotlight feed follows other recent safety-oriented changes at Snapchat. Last month, the company implemented stricter content controls for underage users. Specifically, teenagers aged 13 to 15 are now restricted to sharing Spotlight posts only with people they follow back, a measure designed to enhance user safety and prevent doxxing.
