to Boost Engagement
CONTEUDO:
Disney is partnering with TikTok to integrate fan-created content directly into the Disney+ application. This pilot program will debut in the U.S. over the coming months, with a global expansion strategy planned for the near future.
Bringing Fan Culture to “Verts”
Through this strategic agreement, user-generated videos centered on Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and other core franchises will be featured within the “Verts” section of Disney+. This short-form video feed was introduced by the streaming platform just a few months ago to capture the attention of younger audiences.
Shifting Strategies for Content Variety
Disney has been aggressively expanding the variety of content available within its video feed. The company previously committed to a $1 billion investment in OpenAI as part of a three-year licensing deal intended to allow users to generate short videos using Disney characters via the Sora platform. However, those plans were abandoned following OpenAI’s decision to shut down Sora in March.
The collaboration with TikTok serves as a logical pivot, reflecting the ongoing battle between streaming services and social media platforms for user attention. This competitive landscape is the primary driver behind the launch of the “Verts” feature, mirroring similar moves by competitors like Netflix, HBO Max, and Prime Video.
Empowering the Next Generation of Creators
This deal underscores Disney’s recognition that the next wave of creative talent resides on social media. By launching the Disney Creator Ambassador Program, the media giant is providing TikTok creators with access to its massive content library. Participants will have opportunities to earn rewards, gain significant visibility, attend exclusive events, and explore long-term career prospects within the industry.
Other major streaming players, including Tubi and Peacock, have already begun collaborating with TikTok creators to develop original, long-form content for their respective platforms.
Financial Context and Restructuring
The announcement coincides with the release of Disney’s Q3 results. The company reported a significant financial milestone, with its subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) operating income more than doubling to $712 million, compared to $329 million in the previous year. Concurrently, Disney is restructuring its operations, moving its consumer products business from the Experiences division to the Studios division.
