Qualcomm is aggressively pivoting toward a post-smartphone future, with CEO Cristiano Amon confirming on Tuesday that the company is currently developing over 40 distinct AI-powered wearable devices. This diverse lineup, ranging from smart jewelry and camera-equipped earbuds to AI pins and watches, signals the chipmaker’s intent to dominate the next generation of personal computing.
Powering the Next Wave of AI Hardware
To support this vision, Qualcomm has unveiled two strategic offerings. The first, Snapdragon Reality Elite, is a high-performance platform tailored for mixed-reality glasses, engineered specifically to handle intensive on-device AI tasks. The second is the Scalable Turnkey AI-Ready Toolkit (START), a comprehensive suite of hardware modules and software designed to accelerate the launch of new AI-focused devices, starting with smart eyewear.
Snapdragon Reality Elite: Performance Benchmarks
According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon Reality Elite platform marks a significant leap over previous XR iterations. The company reports performance gains of up to 60% in GPU, 30% in CPU, and a massive 160% in NPU capabilities. Practically, this allows the platform to process a 3-billion-parameter language model at 45 tokens per second—delivering the responsiveness required for fluid AI interactions. Beyond processing power, the chip enhances head and hand tracking while refining see-through visual fidelity.
The platform supports 4.4K per-eye resolution at 90 fps, a slight improvement over the XR2+ Gen 2’s 4.3K resolution. These specifications are critical for reducing motion sickness and eye strain, factors that have historically hindered the adoption of extended-wear headsets.
Versatility in Mixed Reality
Snapdragon Reality Elite is built to accommodate two primary hardware categories: stand-alone video-see-through (VST) headsets that overlay digital content onto real-world camera feeds, and lightweight, tethered optical-see-through (OST) glasses. Early adopters of this technology include the XREAL Project Aura, previously showcased at Google I/O, and an upcoming device from Play for Dream.
START: Accelerating Market Entry
The START toolkit simplifies the development process by bundling an AR chip, software stacks, and companion applications. To reduce barriers for hardware manufacturers, Qualcomm is offering three reference designs: a binocular display, a monocular display, and an audio-camera setup reminiscent of Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses. Initial partners for this white-label program include eyewear manufacturers Inspecs and O’Neill (owned by TitanFlex), with plans to expand support to other hardware form factors in the near future.
The Strategic Shift Away from Smartphones
Amon’s recent comments to CNBC clarify the strategic rationale behind these developments. As corporations prioritize gathering real-world data to fuel AI agents, Amon anticipates a surge in hardware startups experimenting with novel form factors—a trend that could eventually disrupt traditional smartphone giants like Apple and Samsung.
“I think there’s going to be a lot of experimentation with different form factors,” Amon stated. “Right now, we have over 40 designs of those devices, and the types of form factors are very, very broad.” He emphasized the necessity of persistent, wearable technology: “The principle is something that you wear, something that is with you all the time, something that can see the world around you, so you have context and the ability to access an agent and talk to the agent.”
By positioning itself as the foundational silicon layer for these emerging technologies, Qualcomm is making a calculated play to ensure its chips remain at the heart of whatever hardware eventually replaces the smartphone.
