CONTOUDO:
X is officially rolling out a new suite of video editing and recording tools for its iOS app, marking a strategic move to curb the platform’s reliance on recycled, stolen material. By empowering users to create original content directly within the interface, the company hopes to shift the focus away from the viral reposts that have long dominated its feed.
New Creative Features for X Users
The update introduces a robust set of features designed to enhance video production. Users can now overlay captions in multiple languages with customizable aesthetics and utilize green-screen tools that integrate seamlessly with photos from their camera roll or other posts on X.
“One of our biggest priorities is to give creators the tools to create original content [and] reward those creators,” X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, wrote in a post. “We have plenty more updates coming to the video editor in the coming weeks.”
Today we’re launching a brand new Video Editor and Recorder in the iOS app.
This includes some long-awaited features:
• Overlay captions in multiple languages and customize their look
• Green Screen—Add custom backgrounds using posts or photos from your camera roll

The Challenge of Recycled Content
Bier emphasizes that the goal is to provide a “functional” editor so that videos on the platform can finally be original content that does not exist elsewhere. He highlighted a recurring issue where top accounts frequently post stolen material, sometimes years after the content initially went viral.
While recycled content has long been a shortcut to virality—often driven by the real money involved in creator payouts—a video editor alone is unlikely to solve the platform’s structural issues.
Monetization and the Creator Ecosystem
For X to foster a thriving ecosystem, it must ensure creators can reach a scalable audience and effectively monetize their work. Competitors like TikTok, Meta, and YouTube have already established reliable payout systems that incentivize exclusive content. Furthermore, X faces hurdles in creator relations, as evidenced by Bier’s recent criticism of top YouTube creator MrBeast regarding the nature of his content.

Additionally, X currently lacks the sophisticated built-in protections found on other platforms. Meta, for instance, allows creators to block stolen content or claim monetization through attribution, and YouTube provides tools to identify and remove unauthorized re-uploads. Implementing similar safeguards is essential for protecting original creators.
The Bot Problem and Strategic Priorities
Perhaps the most significant hurdle is the platform’s bot population, which inflates views and scrapes content. In April, Bier said that X was suspending “208 bots per minute,” and previously noted that half the product team was dedicated to spam mitigation.
Bier offered further context on the upgrade, noting that videos already account for nearly half of the impressions on X. Given this, the push for better editing tools is a business imperative rather than just an attempt to mimic TikTok.
While X struggles with spam in the AI era, it is not alone. Reddit is currently implementing AI tools to combat bot-generated content, while other platforms have struggled to survive the surge in automated spam. Currently, the new video features are exclusive to the iOS app, as the Android version remains under reconstruction.
