Anthropic is officially moving to develop its own custom AI silicon, assembling a specialized team to design hardware tailored specifically for its AI models.
Business Insider first reported the move, which Anthropic has now confirmed to TechCrunch. The company intends to co-design hardware and software architectures to significantly enhance the speed and efficiency of its systems.
Strategic Shift Toward Vertical Integration
The decision to pivot toward in-house hardware comes as the demand for the Claude AI platform continues to surge. While Anthropic has already secured extensive computing infrastructure deals with major players including AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD, the company has signaled that relying exclusively on third-party hardware may no longer be sufficient to support its long-term scaling goals.
Recent reports from The Information suggest that the company has already begun exploring partnerships with manufacturers like Samsung to bring these custom designs to production.
Joining the Custom Silicon Movement
Anthropic is not alone in its pursuit of proprietary hardware. The move reflects a broader trend among AI leaders looking to bypass supply chain bottlenecks and optimize performance at the chip level. OpenAI recently unveiled its “Jalapeño” chip, developed with Broadcom to handle inference workloads, while Google DeepMind has long utilized its proprietary TPU chips. Similarly, Meta continues to advance its internal MTIA accelerators to support its growing AI infrastructure.
To bolster this initiative, Anthropic is actively recruiting engineers with specialized experience in chip design to join its new “custom silicon team,” according to recent job listings.
